World Toilet Day 2025

A safe, clean, and comfortable toilet is not a privilege, but a basic right. Safe toilets save lives, protect dignity, and build healthier communities. In Nepal, many people in rural and hilly regions still lack adequate sanitation facilities.

Improving sanitation for our pensioners is a key part of our commitment to enhance health, safety, and dignity. Through our toilet construction project, we are ensuring that our elderly veterans and widows have access to safe, accessible, and resilient sanitation facilities.

Many of our pensioners, now in their later years, live in rural, often geographically challenging locations, where sanitation facilities are limited or outdated. Some still rely on toilets built decades ago that have no piped water and fall short of safety and hygiene standards. In other cases, toilets damaged by earthquakes remain unrepaired, posing safety and health risks to users.

After a full review of the facilities our pensioners have access to, a plan was made to construct 47 new toilets in 2025. These toilets have provided our Gurkha veterans and their families with vastly improved sanitation facilities. Piped water allows for flushing toilets and hygienic hand-washing. The provision of ramps, handrails and wider doors makes them easily accessible for people with mobility issues.

Alongside this programme, GWT also builds toilets and handwashing stations as part of our school projects, and provides education on hygiene and sanitation to Gurkha communities as part of our water projects.
