Bring water closer to home in 2026
Today, 3.5 million people in Nepal do not have access to basic water services. Only 16% of the population uses safely managed drinking water – water which is available at home, reliable and free from contamination.
Behind those statistics are stories of real hardship: families relying on streams or open water sources, which run dry in the hot season and become muddy and contaminated in the monsoon season. Farmers losing hours each day fetching water for their crops and animals. And there are elderly veterans like 81 year old Bir Bahadur and his wife, Chuda Kumari, whose health and safety are at risk because clean water is too far from home.
Lila Sherchan has been a Water Engineer with The Gurkha Welfare Trust for over 27 years.
“In that time, I’ve seen what your kindness makes possible. Across the hills of Nepal, a network of pipes carries safe clean water to thousands of water tap stands outside homes, at the heart of communities and in schools.”
“But even after all that’s been achieved, the need for clean water is still urgent in Nepal. We need funding to install 31 new water projects bringing clean water to the remotest communities.”

Let’s make this the year we help end water hardship.
“Our water schemes pioneered the implementation of the ‘one house one tap’ approach for the supply of water across Nepal. Previously, the delivery of water was via community tap stands that were shared among a number of households. This pioneering approach was later incorporated into formal Government of Nepal policy and is, to this day, the standard to which the delivery of water is set.”
