This year’s annual Doko North Challenge has been a huge success, with supporters donning weighted Doko baskets to take on the 5km course at Roundhay Park in Leeds this June.

A huge thank you to everyone who took on this year’s Doko North Challenge helping to raise an incredible £5800 for The Gurkha Welfare Trust. These funds will go such a long way in supporting vulnerable Gurkha veterans, their widows, and communities in Nepal.

The event was a triumph with all the participants crossing the finish line, with the leader finishing the course in an incredible 28:05. Whatever your time was, you deserve a Gurkha salute.

Highlights

There were many great moments throughout the day, and a highlight was meeting Andrew Kearsey, who was taking part in the event with a large group of his family in memory of his uncle John.

“My brother, John, worked in Nepal in the late 1970s as a volunteer improving water supplies in remote areas. Out of necessity he became quite fluent in Nepalese. After the earthquakes in 2015 he returned to Nepal, again as a volunteer, to assist in rebuilding the village schools and houses with earthquake resilient buildings. His language skills returned and his technical and practical help was much appreciated by the Gurkhas.

After 2016 he regularly supported the Gurkha Trust by assisting with the running of the Doko challenge and chatting with veterans. Sadly John died in March 2023. It is in his memory and continuation of support for the Gurkha Trust that I have formed a team to compete in the Challenge and raise funds.”
