Overcoming the Water Crisis in Kattidhunge
A Village in the Heart of Gurkha Country
Kattidhunge is a small, rural village in the Bhojpur District of Eastern Nepal. Nestled deep within the traditional heartland of Gurkha recruitment, the community is defined by its rugged terrain and resilient spirit. Reached only by winding trails and unpaved roads that often become impassable during the monsoon, life here centres on subsistence farming on steep, terraced hillsides.
The Daily Struggle for Water
Despite its scenic location, life in Kattidhunge has long been shaped by a severe water crisis. For generations, the lack of a reliable supply created a cycle of hardship that affected every household:
– Extreme Wait Times: Residents frequently spent over an hour queueing at water sources just to collect enough water for their daily needs.
– Community Tension: The scarcity of water led to frequent disputes. Neighbours often clashed over access to shared taps or the use of water for washing clothes.
– Health Risks: With no regulated supply, water-borne diseases were a constant concern, threatening the health of children and the elderly alike.
For the people of Kattidhunge, water was not just a basic necessity—it was a source of daily conflict and a significant barrier to health and dignity.
A Sustainable Solution for Kattidhunge
To address these challenges, The Gurkha Welfare Trust stepped in and constructed a gravity-fed water system. By tapping into a reliable source high above the village, our engineers designed a network of pipelines and storage tanks to bring clean water directly to the heart of the community.

This project was a collaborative effort. GWT provided the technical expertise and materials, while the villagers themselves contributed through local “Water Users Committee,” helping with the manual labour of digging trenches and laying pipes across the steep terrain.
The Impact: Health, Harmony, and Time Regained
The completion of the project has fundamentally transformed daily life for the residents of Kattidhunge:
– Immediate Access: The days of waiting over an hour for a single bucket of water are over. 83 households, 2 schools, and a community hall now all have taps at their doorsteps, meaning villagers have a constant and reliable supply.
– Improved Public Health: By providing a protected, filtered source, the risk of water-borne diseases has plummeted, significantly improving the health of the village’s children and elderly residents.
– Restored Community Peace: The tension at the taps has vanished. With enough water for everyone, the disputes over shared sources have been replaced by a newfound sense of cooperation and harmony.
– Opportunity Beyond Survival: For the women and children who previously bore the burden of water collection, the time saved is now spent on education, improving crops, or pursuing small businesses.
Clean water in Kattidhunge is more than just a utility—it is the foundation for a healthier, more peaceful, and more prosperous commmunity.
