No village too remote: Delivering vital care to our heroes

Field visits are essential to reach our vulnerable Gurkha veterans and widows in remote villages across Nepal. Many of them, due to age, financial or health issues, are unable to travel to their local Area Welfare Centre for the care they need and deserve.
During these home visits our field teams carry out medical and welfare checks as well as delivering essential medication and equipment.
Reaching the Remote: A Four-Day Mission Across Chitwan
The team from our Area Welfare Centre in Chitwan to the south of Nepal successfully conducted a four-day field visit from 6 January 2026 to 9 January 2026 in Makwanpur, Bara, and Parsa districts.
During the visit the team covered over 300 miles and visited 21 of our pensioners.

The Team
The team on the road consisted of five people, each with a different role during the visit
• Area Welfare Officer: Dilip Gurung
– Responsible for planning the logistics of the trip, managing the multidisciplinary team, and ensuring they reach as many vulnerable pensioners as possible within the challenging terrain and timeframe.
• Dr. Rajendra Rai
- Carries out the physical examinations, monitoring vital signs and checking for common age-related issues. Many Gurkha veterans suffer from long-term conditions like hypertension, diabetes, or respiratory issues (such as COPD). Rajendra reviews a pensioner’s progress, adjusts dosages, and ensures they have a steady supply of medication.
• Cluster Rehabilitation Therapist: Prakash Shrestha
– Plays a vital role in ensuring our veterans and widows maintain their independence and mobility through assessments for mobility aids and physiotherapy exercises to improve strength, balance and motor skills.
• Mobile Health Practitioner: Pramila Rana Magar
– The “hands-on” medical member of the field team. Pramila performs baseline health checks, including measuring blood pressure, blood glucose levels and oxygen saturation, as well as administering vaccinations.
• Driver: Shyam Thapa – Responsible for the safe travel across the rugged terrain of Nepal. Shyam’s role goes far beyond simply steering a vehicle; it requires mechanical skill, endurance, and deep local knowledge. Our drivers are often required to safely handle river crossings, monsoon-damaged paths, and steep gradients.
Comprehensive Care in the Field
Our team provides several services to our pensioners, including:
• Routine medical check-ups
• Vaccination services
• Phlebotomy (blood sample collection)
• Palliative care
• Rehabilitation services
• Welfare-oriented support and assessments
Sete Gurung: Inspiring Us at 104

During this frield trip our team were proud to deliver comprehensive medical and palliative care services to 104-year-old veteran Sete Gurung.
Despite his remarkable age, Sete remains physically active, alert, and highly motivated. His journey is a powerful reminder that with proper medical care, regular movement, guided physiotherapy exercises, timely support, and compassion, age truly is just a number.
His strength, discipline, and positive attitude continue to inspire our team to deliver quality, patient-centred, and compassionate care at every stage of life.
Spreading joy to our pensioners
Gurkha widow Desh Maya Tamang, was delighted to see our team. She spoke about how happy she is with the continued support provided from both the medical and welfare services.
We couldn’t do any of this without the help of our supporters so thank you! Dhanyabad!
