Training Tips for our Trailwalker Teams

With just under three months to go until event weekend, our Trailwalker 2024 teams are out training hard. They will be getting in as many training miles as they can, trying out night walks, testing their kit and planning the all important snacks and drinks that will keep them going through the night.

Training advice

Some of our teams are veterans of the event, with Mark from team “Sully’s 20th” taking on his 20th Trailwalker this year! Others are taking the huge step of tackling the 100km route for the first time. Either way, your training is absolutely vital.

Here is some advice from our Trailwalker experts:

• Set a realistic target – to get the whole team to the finish in under 30 hours is a massive achievement. Anything quicker is a bonus! Work out a plan based on the time to complete each stage, and don’t forget to include rest time at checkpoints.

• Build your training up slowly and steadily, and make sure you train with your support team at least twice – you are going to rely on them to keep you going!

• Train as much as you can – on your own, with your team or with friends. Even if you are already fit and active, you need to get used to the time on your feet.

• Have good walking boots/ trail shoes and if you’re getting new ones, make sure you break them in well before the event.

• I highly recommend getting a good pair of walking poles – helps keep you steady on the rough trail and a godsend when you’re tackling the big hills.

• Make a checklist for each checkpoint, so your support crew know what you expect.

To help you get prepared we have put together a brand new Team Guide, with everything you need to know about event weekend, what kit to bring, navigation, nutrition and more. Plus a handy event planner for you to map out each stage of the route.

Excitement and trepidation!

With nearly 250 teams already signed up it promises to be an epic event this year. Walkers, runners and Support Crews alike will have mixed feelings of excitement and trepidation as they wake up on the Saturday morning and prepare for the start.

Nerves aside, there will be an incredible feeling of camaraderie as teams set off, knowing they will need the support of their teammates all the way.

Do you have what it takes to be Trailwalker Strong?

We still have places for teams of four to take on this epic challenge. Your chance to run or walk alongside serving Gurkha soldiers, ably supported by The Queen’s Gurkha Signals and our enthusiastic volunteers who will be cheering you through every checkpoint!
