New Area Welfare Centres in Nepal
We’re pleased to say that our network of Area Welfare Centres has recently increased to 22 across Nepal (including one in Darjeeling, India).Patrol Base Beni (pictured left during pension payment), located in the Myagdi District of western Nepal, and PB Jiri in the eastern Dolakha District have been restored to their former roles as operational centres.
The transformation of these Patrol Bases into permanently manned AWCs will allow us to provide better support to Gurkha veterans and their families living in those regions.
This includes war heroes such as Rfn Birbahadur Pun MM (pictured above with his wife in November 2014), who fought side by side with Lachhiman Gurung VC during the latter’s medal-winning battle. Birbahadur, who suffers from severe knee injuries and cannot walk unaided, will now have access to full-time medical facilities much closer to his home in Myagdi.
AWC Myagdi, located in a rapidly developing area, currently supports around 240 Gurkha veterans and their dependants. Jiri, best known as a starting point for mountaineers of old on their way to Everest, provides help to around 100 Welfare Pensioners.
