Living with Dignity: The Story of Gurkha Veteran Tul Bahadur Gurung

72-year-old Tul Bahadur Gurung served in the British Army between 1965 and 1969.
“I got recruited into the army from a place called Paklihawa in Nepal. I underwent six months of training in Singapatani, which included jungle training and target practice at Sambly range. I learned to use a 303 rifle and a Bren gun. Following training, I was stationed in Singapore, Kulag, our headquarters, where I was involved in driving duties.”
Returning Home: Life in Kathmandu
Following his service, Tul retuned to Nepal to his wife and settled in Kathmandu. Tuk still lives in Kathmandu with his son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. Sadly his wife passed away around 10 years ago.
GWT Support: Pension and Healthcare
Tul has been receiving a monthly pension from GWT since 2007, he used to collect his pension from the Area Welfare Centre himself, but more recently, due to ill health, his son collects the pension for him. “I buy food with that money.”
Tul finds walking difficult and suffers from pain due to a previous break to his leg. He also suffers with high blood pressure, and visits the Area Welfare Centre in our regional office in Tanahun for regular medical check ups and to collect his medication.

Although Tul is not as mobile as he once was, he does find enjoyment in some more simple pleasures.
“During my free time I sometimes watch TV. I love watching football, wrestling, and boxing on TV. I used to play football and volleyball while I was in the army.”
“I like the support that I have been receiving from GWT. I would like to thank all the supporters. May everything good go your way. I am happy with all the support we have received so far.”
