Bringing dignity and sanitation to homes like Kaumaya Rana’s

There are 3.6 billion people in the world living without access to safely managed sanitation. When some people in a community do not have clean and safe toilets, it threatens the health and safety of all. Poor sanitation can contaminate rivers, crops, and sources for drinking water, spreading deadly disease.

We are helping to put a stop to this in Nepal, ensuring that the homes of Gurkha veterans, their families, and their communities all have clean and safe toilets.

Kaumaya Rana

Kaumaya Rana is 67 years old, her husband passed away two years ago and she now lives with four of her five sons and two of her three daughters.

The family built their own home out of concrete 3-4 years ago, however as they had limited money, they focused on ensuring the rooms of the house were completed and planned to build a toilet later.

“My old man’s main priority was to make a house at that time. He told us that we would first make a house and later build a toilet. It’s already been two and half years and we still couldn’t build a toilet. After the main head of the family is gone its different and very difficult. I alone can’t do anything.”

The existing toilet

The toilet Kaumaya has been using is like a shed built with local raw materials, it is a good minute’s walk away along a difficult path. The toilet doesn’t have direct access to water, or a proper door. It was difficult for Kau Maya and her family to use the existing toilet.

The Trust will be building a new toilet facility for Kau Maya and her family to live more comfortably.

“GWT have looked after us very well. We are happy that Welfare is building us a new toilet. Thank you very much to the donors and GWT for all your help. I always look up to GWT if anything happens. It feels safe knowing that they are there to support us.”
