In memory of Baroness Betty Boothroyd OM

Betty Boothroyd was a force to be reckoned with, coming from humble roots, she was taught to believe that she could be anything she wanted to be. She had a love for performing and politics which together lead her to become the first female Speaker in the House of Commons in Parliament’s 700-year history.
Sadly, Betty passed away in February 2023 but she will not be forgotten. A memorial service of thanksgiving was held for Betty at St. Margaret’s Church, Westminster yesterday, 16th January. The Gurkha Welfare Trust was honoured to be invited.

Al Howard, The Gurkha Welfare Trust CEO and Nirmal Gurung, Assistant Head of Gurkha Welfare (UK) attended, while Bishnu Pun, The Trust’s Executive Officer was involved in the procession itself.
“For me, it was an absolute honour. Having been a Gurkha for many years and then working for The Gurkha Welfare Trust I have had the privilege of attending many services and functions but rarely have I witnessed the level of respect people so obviously held for this incredible woman.”
GWT CEO, Al Howard commented:
“During her lifetime, Betty was a fervent supporter of Gurkhas and The Gurkha Welfare Trust and so we were truly honoured to have been included in both the service of remembrance and to be named in her will. The money left to the trust will enable us to make a real difference to the lives of veterans and their families across Nepal, in her name.”
Betty left her legacy “In deep appreciation of Gurkha forces who helped defend her country in the second world war and thereafter in other world conflicts.”
A Charity Auction of items owned by Betty, from both her professional and personal life will be held on 23rd January.
