Bringing hope to the villagers of Khamare
Our water projects pipe water to remote villages in Nepal and install tap stands for every household, bringing clean water right to their doorsteps. Thanks to a generous donation from one of our supporters, Alasdair Robertson, who served for a short while with 10GR in Hong Kong, we have been able to begin work on a water project in the remote village of Khamare that will directly benefit at least 42 households.
Khamare is a small village in the far east of Nepal with a diminishing population due to the restricted access to water. Gurkha widow Dut Maya Rai is one of the residents of this village.

The challenge of collecting clean water
Currently Dut Maya Rai must walk over 2km to reach the closest water source. She collects water from a communal tap, however the water system is old and worn and the flow is inconsistent. There is a nearby paddy field which is also irrigated by the water source, so during the dry season there is not enough water to go around. Between January – April, the supply is greatly diminished and at times, is only available for one to two hours a day, with each household competing to get sufficient water for their needs.

Plans were made
After the GWT team in Nepal surveyed the area, plans were drawn up to build a large reservoir tank in the hills above the village with pipework leading to an individual tap stand for each household, supplying the village inhabitants with clean, safe water. Construction of this Water Project began at the end of November 2023 and is now very close to completion.
The Gurkha Welfare Trust provided residents of Khamare training on how to maintain their taps to prevent future breakage and ensure the system’s long-term viability, delivering clean, safe water to the community long into the future.
