Flash Flood Strikes Gorkha District

Early on Saturday morning, 10th October, a powerful flash flood struck the Budhi Gandaki river corridor in northern Gorkha District, Nepal. The surge, which hit at approximately 4.35am, is believed to have been triggered by a massive landslide upstream that briefly blocked a mountain tributary before bursting through.

Despite the sudden nature of the flood, we are relieved to confirm that all Gurkha Welfare Trust staff, veterans, and beneficiaries are safe, accounted for, and out of immediate danger.

In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, our field teams swiftly reached out to check on the welfare of our pensioners across affected communities in the region and are actively assessing local road networks, bridge stability, and communication channels. While landslide debris has disrupted travel in parts of the mid-hills, primary routes and communication links remain functional for ongoing welfare checks. Our mobile medical teams stand ready to supply clean water, emergency medical care, and essential medicines should regional supplies be affected.

This flash flood comes as Nepal experiences an unprecedented series of extreme weather events across its mid-hill and high-altitude regions, where heavy seasonal rains and fragile topography heighten the risk of severe landslides.

Nepal authorities have not asked for support from the international community at this time and as such GWT are not involved in the broader emergency response.
