Reaching New Heights: Building a Safe Future for Children in Remote Nepal

Situated at nearly 2,650 meters in Myagdi District, Gurjakhani is one of the most isolated communities in Nepal. While a road now connects the village to the nearest town, monsoon conditions and harsh winters frequently leave it impassable.

“Some places remind you just how unequal access to education can be,” commented Sandesh Bhattari, GWT Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator. Some people of Nepal say टुप्पी भन्दा माथि ठाउँ छैन, गुर्जा भन्दा माथि गाउँ छैन which translated means “Beyond the peak lies nothing higher; beyond Gurjakhani, there is no village above in Myagdi.”

For decades, geographic isolation has severely impacted the local infrastructure in Gurjakhani, particularly access to safe education. Children in the village currently learn in ageing facilities that struggle to withstand the harsh high-altitude weather.

As part of our 2026–27 Major Schools Programme, The Gurkha Welfare Trust is taking on the challenge of building a brand-new, earthquake-resilient school in Gurjakhani.

Executing a major construction project at 2,650 metres above sea level presents significant logistical obstacles, from material transport to weather delays. We look forward to reporting back on progress as our team rises to the challenge!

At the heart of our mission is a commitment to ensuring no Gurkha community is left behind. Providing a safe, inspiring place to learn gives children the start they deserve, strengthening families, supporting dedicated teachers, and shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
