The Next Generation: 323 New Recruits Join the Brigade of Gurkhas

On 6 February 2026, the Attestation Parade for Intake 26 took place, marking the moment 323 young men officially became Trainee Gurkhas in the British Army.
This moment was the culmination of an incredibly competitive journey. This year, there were more than 14,000 applicants from across Nepal for just 323 places. Those standing on the parade square represent the very best—individuals who survived a gruelling selection process to earn the right to wear the Crossed Khukris.

A Momentous Occasion in Pokhara
The parade formed up under the command of Major James Hornby, Officer Commanding British Gurkhas Pokhara. The Inspecting Officer, Lieutenant General M R Elviss CB MBE (Commander Field Army, British Army), oversaw the recruits as they recited their solemn pledge of allegiance to the Brigade of Gurkhas and His Majesty King Charles III.
As the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas provided a stirring musical backdrop, each trainee took part in the traditional attestation ritual—approaching the table to symbolise their commitment before returning to their position.

In a moving address, Lieutenant General Elviss praised the recruits for their achievement and thanked them for their willingness to serve a nation far from their own. He acknowledged the sacrifice inherent in their choice: leaving their homes and families to uphold the reputation of the world’s most elite soldiers.
The Journey to the UK
The journey is only just beginning. Within the coming week, Intake 26 will travel to the United Kingdom to begin a rigorous 39-week training programme at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick.
Under the guidance of Gurkha Company Catterick, they will be transformed into combat-ready soldiers. Once their training is complete, they will join units across the Brigade of Gurkhas to begin their professional military careers.
Congratulations to Intake 26. We wish you the very best of luck in your training.
