Meet the Team: Sumina Thapa Magar Khadgi

Our staff of over 500 in Nepal work hard to provide medical, financial, and development aid to Gurkha veterans, their families, and communities. Our medical teams are based in Area Welfare Centres stationed throughout the country, with some staff working in the office and others venturing out in the field to visit Gurkha veterans and widows in their homes.

Meet Sumina

Sumina joined GWT in 2018 following some time working in the Emergency Department of Manipal Hospital.

Sumina works as a Mobile Health Practitioner at our Area Welfare Centre in Tanahun.

What is your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is providing exceptional healthcare to our old pensioners. Many of us might not even give such care to our own family members. We consider our beneficiaries as our own grandparents, and serving them and making them happy is the most rewarding aspect of my job.

What happens after you arrive at the pensioners’ home?

We plan everything before we go to a pensioner’s house.  We will have a telephone consultation with them before we visit where we ask them about their problems and needs.

Following a consultation with the doctor and officers we plan accordingly taking the relevant medicines and equipment.

I feel good that the pensioners are always happy to see us. They are always welcoming. Once we arrive at the pensioner’s home, we greet them and talk with them checking how they have been. Then we start checking them and take note of the findings. If a doctor has advised us to do an ECG check, we are able to do this as we have the necessary equipment with us during our field visits. Once all checks have been carried out we will give any medicine according to their requirements.

We also assess any other needs they may have such as the need for walking aids or a commode chair, air mattress etc. These aids are carried to each field visit in the GWT vehicle so can be distributed immediately once a need has been identified.

Message to the donors

To all the donors who have helped us, I would like to thank all of you. Because of your kind donations, we have been able to help all our pensioners and give them proper service. I feel because of their effort and generous donations all of this is possible. So, thank you very much and do keep on supporting the GWT so that we can keep on helping our pensioners and give them the best service they deserve.
