Sumaya’s Journey to Recovery

When Sumaya Gurung suffered a stroke she thought she would never be able to walk again.  Living with her youngest son she was unable to hold herself up and couldn’t be left alone for any period of time.

After a review by the GWT Field Team, Sumaya was admitted to our residential home in Kaski, where she underwent a thorough physical assessment. It was discovered that she was suffering from right-side muscle weakness, hand contracture, leg weakness and was at risk of malnutrition.

A physiotherapy programme was drawn up for her and the team worked with her to improve her condition.

Following four months of rehabilitative treatment at the Residential Home, Sumaya’s mobility had improved drastically, exceeding all of her own expectations. She is now able to walk around with the aid of a walking stick, giving her back much of her independence.

Following her discharge from our Residential Home, Sumaya has daily physio exercises to carry out at home to enable her to maintain and build on her strength. The rehabilitation facility is a two hour journey away so our Rehabilitation Therapists make the journey to her to ensure that her recovery continues.

By receiving rehabilitative services at home, Sumaya has been able to recover her strength within the comfort of her familiar surroundings, eliminating the need for costly travel and treatment.
