October: Our month in pictures
Our Gurkha veterans and widows have been celebrating across Nepal in our Residential Homes, Welfare Centres and in their own homes. Pensioners from our Residential Home in Dharan even went on a special day out to celebrate the occasion.
The Last Overland Expedition
In 1955, The First Overland famously drove a Land Rover from the UK to Singapore.
Over the last few months, ‘The Last Overland’ team have been recreating the 16,000km journey in reverse. At the beginning of October, the team travelled across Nepal, meeting the Gurkha veterans they’re raising money for. We are pleased to be one of the trip’s designated charities.
Pension Payment Days at our Area Welfare Centres
Across October, our Welfare Centres across Nepal held pension payment days. Whilst the main focus is providing financial aid to Gurkha veterans and widows, the sessions take a holistic approach, ensuring pensioners receive much needed everyday items, medicine and medical advice.
Although we offer to deliver their pensions to their homes, many Gurkha pensioners travel from far and wide to our offices to collect theirs in person and chat with old comrades and friends.
Visiting pensioners at their homes
Throughout October, our Pensioner Support Teams travelled across Nepal visiting the homes of vulnerable Gurkha veterans and widows.
Although monsoon season has ended in Nepal, remains of landslide rubble and muddy paths have made journeys particularly difficult for our staff. Despite the treacherous conditions, we do whatever it takes to reach our pensioners.
Global Handwashing Day
On 15 October, we celebrated Global Handwashing Day, an international advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.
