March: Our month in pictures
On March 20 and 21, many Gurkha veterans and families celebrated the Hindu festival of colours known as Holi. Celebrations took place in their homes, in our Welfare Centres and at our Residential Homes. It’s is a celebration of fertility, colour, and love, as well as the triumph of good versus evil.
International Women’s Day
On International Women’s Day (8 March), we celebrated the amazing women from villages in Nepal. Women who get involved in helping us bring clean water to their communities. Women like Deepa Sayangtang.
Pension collection at our Welfare Centres
The beginning of March saw pension payment week at many of our Welfare Centres across Nepal. Although we offer to deliver their pensions to their homes, many Gurkha pensioners travel to our offices. Collecting their pension on our pension payment days is also a great excuse to catch up with old comrades.
Bringing aid to the homes of Gurkha veterans and widows
Throughout March, our Pensioner Support Teams travelled across Nepal visiting the homes of vulnerable Gurkha veterans and widows.
World Water Day
The theme of World Water Day 2019 (21 March) was ‘Leaving no one behind’. In Nepal, that’s exactly what we strive to do. Since 1989, we’ve partnered with UK Aid to provide access to clean water and sanitation to remote communities in Nepal. As a result of our work, over 350,000 people have gained access to clean water.
New homes for our pensioners
We’re building new homes for Gurkha veterans and widows in Nepal. Our recent appeal spoke of the dangers of living in Nepal, a country prone to earthquakes. Thanks to donations from our amazing supporters, we’re taking pre-emptive action by building 300 earthquake-resilient homes for Gurkha veterans and widows over the next three years.
