GWT’s Footprints Are Climbing High

Our schools programme builds and repairs schools in remote regions of Nepal, improving access to education for thousands of children. We have recently completed work on one of our most remote school refurbishments to date – one that presented some immense challenges!

Lowo Nyuphug Namdrol Gumba School is located in Lomanthang, in the North of the Mustang District, bordering Tibet. Set in the foothills of the Himalayas, Lomanthang is 150km from our GWT Headquarters in Pokhara. With the roads winding through a barren and mountainous landscape, the journey can take up to two days. When our team travelled to the school on an initial site recce, they encountered treacherous conditions with parts of the road blocked by mud, rocks and landslides.

The need for a new school building was identified as the existing school building was in a very poor condition. The buildings were unstable with cracked walls and leaky roofs.  The cramped classrooms had been constructed of little more than stones and mud, and didn’t meet the standards of even a basic school.

Construction began earlier this year and despite considerable challenges due to the remote location of the school, the team worked hard to get this school built and ready to handover to the community.

The children are delighted to have a safe place to learn with clean and spacious new classrooms, all built to an earthquake-resilient standard. On completion of the project GWT staff conducted a final assessment to ensure all works have been completed to the highest standard. The project will be officially handed over after the festival of Dashain.
