Art Exhibition Bringing Gurkha Women into the Limelight

Suzana Shrish is a budding scholar and an artist. Suzana presents the untold stories of Gurkha Women in her exhibition, “Gurkha Women – An Echo in the Story,” shedding light on the often-overlooked narratives of Gurkha women, revealing a tapestry of strength, endurance, and perseverance.

A tribute to Gurkha Women

The Gurkha women, comprising the wives and daughters of Gurkha soldiers, emerge as tenacious figures in the remote rugged hills of Nepal. Their resilience, despite facing challenges like limited access to education, healthcare, and modern amenities, becomes a testament to their adaptability in the face of adversity.

The exhibition delves into the recurring and symbolically significant roles played by Gurkha women within the broader narrative of Gurkha history. Each story, experience, and contribution is carefully curated to resonate, emphasising the lasting impact of these women on the Gurkha legacy.

Reaching Out

Suzana interviewed over 50 Gurkha women aged 70 and above, including a number of Gurkha widows supported by The Gurkha Welfare Trust. The exhibition incorporates portrait sketches, visual art, artifacts, and a comprehensive research paper, providing a multifaceted glimpse into the lives of Gurkha women.
