The 15th of October is Global Handwashing Day, an international day of advocacy when we raise awareness about the importance of washing our hands with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

Maintaining hand hygiene is critical to reducing the transmission of disease, and we promote effective sanitation techniques across all our services in Nepal. Our Welfare Centres regularly hold workshops for our Gurkha veterans and widows on handwashing to help reduce the risk of illness.

When our team delivers clean water to villages, we set up volunteer committees to promote effective sanitation techniques, which greatly reduces cases of waterborne disease.

When we build schools, we ensure that classes are held to inform children of the importance of washing their hands. According to The Global Handwashing Partnership, promoting hand hygiene is proven to improve children’s school attendance.

During the pandemic, the Trust partnered with UK Aid Direct to deliver handwashing stations to schools, healthcare facilities, and municipal buildings across Nepal. We also attached guides of best handwashing practices to these stations, so people knew how to better protect themselves against Covid-19. As we move beyond the pandemic, The Gurkha Welfare Trust will continue to bring clean water and handwashing facilities to communities in need across Nepal.
