Enriching the lives of Gurkha veterans and widows in our Residential Homes
The first residents moved into our Kaski Residential Home in Pokhara in July 2010, with our second home opening its doors in Dharan in 2014. The Residential Homes have capacity for 48 residents and as well as caring for elderly Gurkha veterans and widows, they also provide rehabilitative care for those who require it. Alongside providing round-the-clock care, staff at the homes provide regular social activities and outings to keep them active and improve their mental well-being.
Residents are taken out on regular field trips to give them new experiences, enhancing their daily lives and creating memories together. The field trips take residents to local places of beauty, attractions, or religious sites, with an annual trip including an overnight stay to that they can travel further afield.
Enhancing Well-being
Field trips offer a welcome break from routine and contribute significantly to the overall well-being of residents. The change of scenery, the social interaction, and the opportunity to learn new things all contribute to a positive mental and emotional state.
104 year old Ash Kumari Tamang, holds the record for the longest stay at RH Kaski, having resided there since 2011. She actively participated in this year’s outing visit to Baglung, Parbat, and Myagdi Districts. During this visit, she was honored by the main priest of Baglung Kalika Temple, receiving a Khada and tika. “It is our fortune to meet such a distinguished elder,” the priest remarked.
After the visit, Ash Kumari expressed her gratitude, saying, “None of my ancestors ever had the opportunity to visit such holy places. I am overjoyed to have had this chance, made possible through your kind support. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to GWT and all the donors.”
