Borneo veteran takes his hat off to the Gurkhas

A British Army veteran who served alongside Gurkhas in Borneo in 1965 has pledged to raise funds for The Gurkha Welfare Trust through sales of his company’s flat caps, scarves and ties.

Managing Director of The Original Yorkshire Clothing Company (TOYCCL), Charles H Scaife was inspired to help The Gurkha Welfare Trust when he saw Gurkhas helping to provide COVID testing and injections in the UK press recently. He remembers the Gurkhas well and felt inspired to help military causes like ours following the amazing fundraising efforts of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

“I thought if a 99-year-old from Keighley can raise a lot of money, as a young lad of 78 I should be able to raise some money to help the Gurkha families – especially as Nepal is currently experiencing the full effects of the pandemic.”

“Together we can help ex-Gurkhas and their dependents to live out their lives with dignity and repay the debt of honour to the brave soldiers who have stood side by side with us through numerous conflicts over the past 200 years.”

A Guinness a day keeps the doctor away

Charles remembers his time serving alongside Gurkhas in Borneo in 1965 vividly, as well as the help they gave him then:

“When I ended up in the camp hospital and my Gurkha patrol mates snuck in cans of Guinness to aid my speedy recovery…. It seems only fitting that guided by my military history and having been recently reawakened to the Gurkha’s plight by Capt. Sir Tom’s autobiography, that TOYCCL should extend a welcome hand by raising money to support the work of The Gurkha Welfare Trust in Nepal- we owe them!”
