We pay tribute to long term supporter Alasdair MacConachie OBE, who sadly died on Christmas Day at Darlington Memorial Hospital. Alasdair, a philanthropist and successful businessman, worked tirelessly throughout his life to support the local community. Known locally as ‘Mister Darlington’ Alasdair had a huge impact on the town that had become his home. He was awarded an OBE in 2004 for services to the community, served as High Sherriff of Durham in 2009, and was granted the Freedom of Darlington in 2021.
The Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, Sue Snowdon, said, “People like Alasdair MacConachie, who worked tirelessly throughout his life to support people and organisations – he simply cared, always going the extra mile. He will be deeply missed.”
Alasdair was involved in launching the Annual Concert of the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas in Darlington. He continued to help organise this concert in aid of the GWT for 24 years.
His son, Simon, said, “He made a huge contribution to public life but, above all else, he was a devoted family man, and we will all miss him more than words can say.”
