GWT Community Projects Across Nepal

The Gurkha Welfare Trust was founded in 1969 with the primary mission to provide financial support to impoverished veterans in Nepal.
When Gurkha veterans returned to Nepal in the 1960s and 70s, they returned to a country with very limited infrastructure and no national health or social safety net.
After a short amount of time GWT recognised that simply providing a pension wasn’t enough if the veterans lived in villages without clean water, accessible healthcare, or schools for their children. To ensure a veteran could live with dignity, the Trust had to improve the environment they lived in.
Extending our support
GWT began work improving veterans’ communities through:
– Water Projects: Installing clean water systems to drastically reduce waterborne diseases, a major threat to elderly veterans and their families.
– Rebuilding and Refurbishing Schools: to ensure that the children and grandchildren of those who served for Britain have access to a reliable education.
– Medical Camps: The healthcare we provide at our Medical Camps is critical for many people living in rural Nepal, with some villagers travelling for days to access our first-class treatment. For many, this is the only medical assistance they receive.
– Earthquake-Resilient Homes: Nepal is highly prone to earthquakes, landslides, and floods. Community aid became even more critical following the 2015 earthquake. The Trust used its existing community aid framework to rebuild thousands of homes and has continued this mission to ensure that every Gurkha veteran and widow has a safe place to call home.

Future plans
We are continuing to deliver community projects in 2025/26. Our plans include:
– Building a total of 100 Earthquake-Resilient homes and retrofitting existing homes to make them more accessible and comfortable for our increasingly elderly pensioners.
– Completing two major school builds, 15 minor school extension projects, 105 minor school refurbishment projects and 6 major school refurbishments.
– Completing 30 water and sanitation projects.
– Delivering four medical camps in Nepal’s most remote regions.
