The impact of your support

The life-changing impact of our work

Our Annual Report covers the highlights of our year and how our work has transformed the lives of thousands of Gurkha veterans, their widows and communities in Nepal. For an organisation with relatively few resources in the UK, the Trust continues to deliver an impact far above its weight in Nepal, thanks to the incredible support of you, our donors.

“Our priority remains the consistent and multifaceted services for our most vulnerable beneficiaries that allows them to live with the dignity they richly deserve.” Al Howard, CEO.

The Annual Report covers our financial year from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024 and includes the audited accounts. Read the full report here or request a hard copy by emailing us.

Where does your donation go?

Though at its core, the support of elderly and vulnerable Gurkha pensioners remains our priority, our wider services across Nepal continue to deliver an exponential impact.

The medical service available to all Gurkha veterans and their dependents is now our most expensive service to deliver, but also the one with the most significant effect across Nepal. In a country with no national health service and often little or no access to medical care, the professional service the Trust delivers grants veterans and their families the basic human right to effective healthcare.

Between July 2023 and June 2024 we spent £21.3 million delivering our services:

Where does our money come from?

In 2023/24 the total fundraising income was £14.14m. Income from legacies was £6.92m, 73% of which came from previous GWT supporters.

In addition to the money given to us by individuals we also received funds from the UK government and income from our investments.

How much of your donation goes to helping Gurkhas?

As an organisation run with ‘military efficiency’ we pride ourselves on being transparent to all our donors.

Last year, for every £1 of income, The Gurkha Welfare Trust spent just 13p on fundraising (including management of our investments) and 87p on supporting Gurkha veterans, widows and their wider communities.

We received £3.6M Grant in Aid (GIA) from the MOD in support of delivering our welfare and £4.9M GIA in support of the medical services. We received £1.6M from FCDO for delivery of water projects.

That means that, in conjunction with the money the Trust receives from its investment income, money that you donate can be spent directly on welfare projects.

For every £1 we spent on fundraising last year, we raised £5.00.
