Lifelong Commitment: Satya Sagar Ghale Awarded BEM

WO2 (Ret’d) Satya Sagar Ghale has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in recognition of his outstanding and consistent service to the ex-Gurkha community across northern India.

The medal was formally presented by Her Excellency Ms Lindy Cameron CB OBE, British High Commissioner to India, on Wednesday, 1 April 2026, at the British High Commissioner’s Residence in New Delhi. Family members of Satyasagar Ghale and Major Kiran Pun MVO (Gurkha Major British Gurkhas Nepal) were among the guests at the ceremony.

Enlisted into the Brigade of Gurkhas in 1967, Satya Sagar served for 21 years before retiring in 1988. In 2005, he joined the Gurkha Welfare Trust as a Part Time Honorary Area Welfare Officer (HAWO), based in Dehradun.

Serving our veterans

As Honorary Area Welfare Officer in Dehradun, Satya Sagar supports our Area Welfare Centre in Darjeeling , which takes care of the welfare of Gurkha veterans and widows over an exceptionally large area,  stretching from Delhi to Dharamsala, covering six Indian states: Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh.

Working largely independently, Satya conducts home visits, completes Pensioners’ Risk Assessments, assists with secondary medical claims, coordinates life certificate renewals, and hosts official visitors from GWT and the Brigade of Gurkhas Nepal (BGN). His records are meticulously maintained, and his reports are consistently accurate, thorough, and timely.

Outstanding Commitment

What truly sets Satya Sagar apart is the incredible dedication he brings to his role. Although he works part-time, his work ethic matches that of a full-time officer and he often goes above and beyond to ensure every pensioner receives timely support, regardless of the distance or challenges involved.

Although Dehradun is geographically distant from AWC Darjeeling,  Satya remains an integral extension of the team, largely due to his professionalism and sense of personal responsibility. Visitors to Dehradun consistently commend his conduct, organisation, and dedication in their post-visit reports.

Trusted by the Community, Respected by All

Satya Sagar is highly regarded by the ex-Gurkha community, many of whom consider him not merely an official point of contact, but a trusted member of their extended family. His deep understanding of their needs, coupled with his sense of humour and approachable manner, has strengthened trust in the Gurkha Welfare Trust’s work on the ground.

Even in later life, his  exceptional work ethic and consistency continue unabated, significantly enhancing the reputation and credibility of GWT in India.
