The Heartwarming Journey of Chandan Shahi
A Life-Altering Accident
In the quiet village of Gyanpura, Dadeldhura, lives a remarkable 10-year-old boy named Chandan Shahi. Four years ago, his life changed forever when a playful moment with friends ended in a tragic accident involving a JCB machine. The incident led to the amputation of his left forearm, thrusting Chandan into a world of physical and emotional challenges at a very young age.
Chandan’s family received compensation of 1.4 million Nepali Rupees, which was initially used for treatment in India. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the money was held by his uncle, a police officer. As a result, the family struggled to afford ongoing care and rehabilitation. Chandan’s mother shared how difficult life had become for her son – he struggled with basic daily tasks and felt increasingly isolated from his peers.
News of a GWT Medical Camp brought hope
Everything changed when the family heard that the GWT would be running an Specialist Outreach Medical Camp in Dadeldhura. For Chandan’s mother, it was a moment of renewed hope that her son could receive treatment that would give him back some independence.
The GWT medical camp followed a well-organised approach. Before the main camp in January, a team conducted an initial assessment to understand the needs of people with disabilities in the local area. Chandan attended the camp where the rehabilitation team carried out a detailed consultation and prosthetic measurement, recognising his potential to regain mobility and return to a more normal life.
A life transformed
A follow-up fitment camp was held in March, and on the second day, Chandan received his artificial limb. The joy on his face was unmistakable – hope had finally become reality. With the guidance of the rehab team, he began learning how to use his new arm. Chandan soon got used to the exercises and was thrilled with his new abilities.
At home he is continuing the rehabilitation exercises and is gradually regaining his independence. The rehab team continues to monitor his progress through telephone consultations, ensuring he can reintegrate into daily life and reconnect with friends.
Chandan’s journey is a powerful example of how specialised medical support can dramatically change lives and overcome physical disabilities. Chandan’s transformation not only gives hope to his own family but also serves as an inspiration to others in similar situations.
