The 75th Anniversary of The Queen’s Gurkha Signals: A Legacy of Excellence

On 23 September 2024, The Queen’s Gurkha Signals proudly celebrates its 75th anniversary, a historic milestone for a regiment that has become a vital part of the British Army’s communications unit. This special anniversary commemorates seven and a half decades of service, sacrifice, and dedication to duty by the Gurkhas.

The Formation of The Queen’s Gurkha Signals

The origin of The Queen’s Gurkha Signals can be traced back to 1948, soon after the end of World War II and the partition of British India. With Nepalese Gurkhas now a permanent feature of the British Army, there was a need to create specialised units to address new military challenges. In 1949, the Gurkha Signals was officially raised as part of the Royal Signals, the British Army’s communications corps, primarily to support operations in the Far East.

Initially serving in the Malayan Emergency during the 1950s and 60s, QGS proved its worth through exceptional communications expertise in challenging environments. These skills became increasingly valuable as the British military adapted to a rapidly changing global landscape, marked by the Cold War and decolonisation efforts across Asia and Africa.

Honouring a Rich Legacy

Since its formation, The Queen’s Gurkha Signals has consistently demonstrated unparalleled skill in military communications, from transmitting crucial battlefield messages to handling sophisticated modern technology. The unit has participated in various operations, from major conflicts like the Falklands War and the Gulf War to peacekeeping missions and humanitarian efforts.

One of the defining characteristics of QGS is its embodiment of the famous Gurkha spirit – courage, loyalty, and resilience. These values have underpinned the regiment’s work across continents, whether in the dense jungles of Southeast Asia, the arid deserts of the Middle East, or the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan. Through it all, the Gurkha soldiers have maintained a reputation for being “second to none.”

Looking to the Future

Looking ahead, The Queen’s Gurkha Signals will continue to adapt and innovate. The ever-evolving nature of military communications means the Gurkhas will continue to play a crucial role in defence operations, specialising in cyber warfare, information security, and advanced communication systems. Their ability to combine traditional soldiering skills with cutting-edge technology ensures they remain a vital asset to the British Army.

As we celebrate this anniversary, we honour not only the regiment’s remarkable history but also the unique bond between Britain and Nepal that has stood the test of time.
