A Career with the Gurkhas

Peter Duffell’s military journey began in 1960 when he was commissioned into the 2nd Gurkha Rifles. He served alongside the Gurkhas in various campaigns, including Malaya during the Malayan Emergency and Borneo during the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation where he led Gurkha forces in covert operations against Indonesia, earning a Military Cross for his gallantry.

Peter later went on to become Commander British Forces, Hong Kong where he oversaw British military presence during a critical period in the years before the handover to China.

After retiring from the army in 1995, Sir Peter Duffell embarked on a new chapter in his career. He transitioned from military service to the business world, taking on the role of Chief Executive of Dechert LLP.

From Soldier to Storyteller

Peter recounts his experiences from his time in the military in his book Gurkha Odyssey: Campaigning for the Crown. The book delves into the Gurkhas’ rich history, their unique character, and their unwavering spirit. Peter weaves his personal experiences campaigning alongside these loyal and dedicated soldiers into the narrative, offering a firsthand account of their bravery and camaraderie.
