New children’s book covers the Gurkhas in Burma

An adventure story for 8-12 year olds, this new book is the culmination of years of hard work from author, Hannah Watson and the Burma Book Club; made up of GWT staff member Piers Lawson, donor Mary-Rose Cooney and partners The Gurkha Museum.

The Jungle War

The characters of Jim, Ralph and Thaman are imaginary, but the kinds of events that befall them in Burma are real. They’re based on the recollections of other brave young men like them who fought as part of ‘The Forgotten Army’ from 1942-1945.

As the Second World War sweeps the globe, follow 18-year-old Jim Chance into the jungles of Burma. Meet Thaman, a Gurkha soldier, and join the men in a fight for survival like no other. Raging rivers, ferocious beasts and the deadly might of the Japanese Army will push Jim and Thaman to the edge. Is there a way back from the brink? And when all is said and done, will the world remember their story? This is the tale of The Forgotten Army.

A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to The Gurkha Welfare Trust.

There are various promotional events planned to launch the book, including The National Army Museum on Saturday 20th April, at the Gurkha Museum on Thursday 9th May and at The Chalke Valley History Festival on Tuesday 25th June.
