A Safe Place to Call Home

Rifleman Tek Bahadur Rai, veteran of the 10th Gurkha Rifles, is now 81 years old. He receives financial and medical aid from the GWT, delivered by staff from our Area Welfare Centre in Bhojpur, East Nepal.

Tek lives with his wife and the family of his second son. His son and his family are subsistence farmers and have some livestock, however neither Tek nor his wife are able to work due to poor health.

A temporary home

Tek himself built a temporary home for his family, but it was never a safe structure with the walls and ceiling constructed of CGI sheets with plywood partitions. This made the home unstable, at risk of damage from adverse weather, particularly during the monsoon season when there was no way to keep the water out.

Tek sought the support of GWT Nepal.

With no other income, the welfare pension is a lifeline for Tek and his family. The team at GWT Nepal assessed his living conditions and following a visit agreed to build him a new, stable, earthquake-resilient home.

All homes built by our team in Nepal are based on a standard design that can be modified to fit the plot of land. New homes are fitted with handrails and ramps to improve access for those with limited mobility. False ceilings are also fitted, to offer sound protection from rain on the metal roof. This also helps with heat retention in the winter and ceiling fans assist with cooling during the summer.

Tek and his wife are now living happily in their new home. Tek has heartily expressed his gratitude towards the GWT and the generous supporters who provide the funds to construct new homes for those who need them.
