Doko Challenge: Race against the Gurkhas in 2021

Join us in 2021 for our 5km runs with a twist: the Doko Challenge North and Doko Challenge South!

Widely known as some of the most fearless and respected soldiers in the military, the Gurkhas have fought in the British Army for over 200 years and their recruitment process remains one of the toughest in the world.

In Nepal, the traditional Gurkha Recruitment Doko race is an uphill sprint in the Himalayan foothills while carrying a traditional Nepali Doko basket on your back. Potential recruits are expected to complete the course in under 46 minutes. Failure to do so means the end of their Gurkha selection process.

“It is our identity as Gurkha. The paras have their test, we have ours. It’s special.”

Gurkha Captain (Ret’d) Ganesh Rai.

Drawing on the success of our first Doko Challenge in 2019, we are now looking forward to 2021 where we will not only be hosting our Doko Challenge South event but introducing our first Doko Challenge North event too.

Based on the traditional Gurkha Recruitment Doko race, these challenges see a 5km run carrying a traditional Doko basket weighing either 5kg, 10kg, or 15kg with a time to beat of 46 minutes. Whether you beat the time or not, a deliciously chilled Khukri Beer waiting for you at the finish line!

Registration costs £25 and there is a minimum fundraising target of £150.00 per person, which will go towards supporting Gurkha veterans, their families and communities to live with dignity in Nepal.

The Doko Challenge South will be taking place on Sunday 6th June in London, starting at Richardson Evans Memorial Playing Fields and exploring the beautiful surroundings of Wimbledon and Putney Commons.
