Race to the Sea – the “Ystwyth Way”
Following the success of the long-established Sabrina Walk, the Race to the Sea along Ystwyth Way launched in 2018 and has since gained considerable popularity amongst the UK walking community, particularly those who enjoy visiting the Cambrian Mountains in the Autumn! The 50km Ystwyth Way challenge is the second to commemorate the River Sisters of Pumlumon, encompassing a fantastic route with spectacular scenery.
The amazing 50km route has a total ascent of 3,412ft, closely following the Afon Ystwyth on a breath-taking course from its source to its outfall, taking in the picturesque valleys and villages of Powys and Ceredigion. Starting out from Llangurig, the route follows the Wye Valley Long Distance Trail backwards to Troed yr-esgair and then leaves the Trail to follow the mountain and woodland track up to Yr-Allt and over to Esgair Maingwynion and Pen-y-Garn to the village of Cwmystwyth. Trekkers then closely follow the banks of the river Ystwyth, initially on the South, crossing at Pont-rhyd-y-groes, Llanafan, Llanilar, and Rhydyfelin, eventually joining the Ceredigion Coastal Path on the North bank of the river. From there, the route heads Northwards along the Coastal Path to the finish at the Aberystwyth Band Stand on the Promenade.
The route is clearly marked at key points throughout, and the event is dog friendly for responsible owners and CaniCross Participants alike. Everyone will be welcomed across the finish line with a buffet meal and refreshments at the Aberystwyth Bandstand, where celebrations will continue with live music until 19:30!
As valued fundraising partners, the Cambrian Mountain Events organisers will be fundraising for the Gurkha Welfare Trust throughout the day, and we encourage all participants to collect sponsorship too! Once you’ve registered, simply get in touch and we will be pleased to help set-up your JustGiving page. All donations will be gratefully received, however small – funds go a long way in Nepal and can really make a difference to our vital work.
Registration closes Tuesday 25th October 2022. A detailed Route Description, Route Map and GPX File will be included in your digital Entrants Pack.
