As we enter a new financial year in Nepal, we’re pleased to announce a range of increases in the aid we provide to our Gurkha veterans and their communities.

How are we helping?

Welfare Pension

As of July, the pension we pay to around 5,800 impoverished Gurkha veterans and widows has been raised to 10,000 Nepalese rupees (NPR) per month, or roughly £71.50. This 11% increase ensures it continues to cover the full cost of the shopping basket we use to determine its rate.

Carer's Allowance

This aid is given to families caring for an elderly pensioner to cover the additional costs or loss of income.

This year, it’s been increased from 2,000 to 2,500 NPR per month (£18).

Winter Fuel Allowance

The allowance will be paid to all Welfare Pensioners with their November/December pension to help them through the cold months.

This year, it's been increased from 2,200 to 2,500 NPR (£18).

Water Projects

We’ll be working on 120 clean water and sanitation schemes in 2016/17 – 40 more than usual – thanks to an increase in UK aid funding from the British government.

An average water project costs around £25,000. This year, we'll also repair the last 32 of our water projects damaged by the 2015 earthquakes.

Community Centres/Health Posts

This new area of support forms part of our earthquake response. As well as providing a hub for community activity, the centres also offer medical outreach facilities. We’ll be building 4 centres this year at a cost of over £170,000.

School Projects

We'll be building 13 new schools in 2016/17 at a cost of over £1.4 million. This is a marked increase on our previous schools programme, with most being built in earthquake affected areas.

Gurkha Homes

We’ll be spending over £1.3 million on our home rebuilding programme for veterans and widows in 2016/17.

We hope to finish all 1,200 rebuilds and 500 repairs this financial year, although minor shocks continue to cause new damage.

Our financial commitment

In total, we’ll be spending over £18 million in Nepal in 2016/17, including around £3.5 million on our earthquake response.

This level of aid is only possible thanks to the incredible kindness and generosity of our supporters, who continue to come through for Gurkha veterans, widows and communities in their time of need.
