Economic migration and a decade long Maoist insurgency have had a devastating impact on Gurkha villages. Village youth have fled to the safety of Nepal's cities or left their traditional homes in search of work. Without an extended family or village community to care for them in old age, many Welfare Pensioners have been abandoned in their homes, marooned and unable to fend for themselves.
The Trust has a duty to go to every possible length to provide the support our Welfare Pensioners need, to live out their days with the security and dignity they richly deserve. The Residential Homes Project is an innovative and groundbreaking development for our aging warriors who require extra support.
Residential Homes have a dedicated team of staff who provide around the clock care ensuring a worry free old age for Residents. Special attention has been given to residents' long term needs, especially in the area of Medical Care. Each Resident has their own private room (with en-suite bathroom) which provides a cosy retreat for quiet reflection. Meal times are a lively affair where Residents sit down to enjoy a square meal and share stories of their Army days with former comrades.
By providing a real home, not a hospice or hotel, the Trust has helped each to rediscover that inner spirit that made them the soldiers they once were.
The first home officially opened in Kaski, west Nepal in November 2010 and is a sanctuary for 26 of our most vulnerable and lonely Welfare Pensioners. Architectural plans for a second home in Dharan, east Nepal has been finalised and the construction work has started.
