Our welfare pensioners arrive from near and far later this week to collect their pensions. Some will have walked two days to get to their nearest AWC, whilst those older and more frail veterans may have been carried from their village.
Many are accompanied by family members on the journey. Each welfare pensioner presents their pension book, makes their mark on the ledger with an inked thumb, and receives their pension, which will last them for the quarter.
Welfare pension payment day is not only about these old soldiers and widows collecting their vital pensions, it is also an opportunity for them to seek medical help and to meet old comrades to remember days gone by.
It may take three days to dispense all the welfare pensions and some pensioners may not even appear at the AWC. Staff will plan how best to check up on them and deliver their pension to them if necessary. They will also be able to provide medical treatment if it's needed.
