Welfare Pensioners receive winter fuel allowance

For an old pensioner (British or Gurkha), keeping warm during the harsh winter months is difficult and costly. Like many parts of the UK night temperatures in the Hills will soon start biting far below freezing.

With a welfare pension covering the bare essentials, there is little remaining for extra firewood or kerosene. A pensioner's choice can be drastic: food or warmth.

The Trust recognises the seriousness of this problem and the demoralising, debilitating effect of bitter winters on old bones. Therefore over the next few weeks, welfare pensioners will find a modest bonus of £11.00 on top of their pension pay packet. This they can use to buy a little extra fuel or an extra layer of clothing.

The winter fuel allowance was once again donated in its entirety by a generous supporter in Norfolk, who hopes to make the winter a little more bearable for our 10,000 pensioners.
