The band of the Brigade of Gurkhas performs in the North-East

A packed audience at Darlington's Dolphin Centre were treated to a spectacular performance, courtesy of the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas. Under new Director of Music, Major Vernon Yates, the band entertained the audience with a varied programme of popular and classical music, in a fundraiser in aid of the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

The 11th annual concert, sponsored by Sherwoods of Darlington, was organised by Yorkshire branch chairman of The Gurkha Welfare Trust, Lieutenant Colonel Keith Ryding (top right, with Concert sponsor Alasdair MacConachie, managing director of Sherwoods and the deccorative kukris raffled at the concert) with the help of Gurkha Company in Catterick Garrison and members of local Gurkha community. He said: "Without the support of the band and sponsors Sherwoods we would not be able to offer the level of help we do to less fortunate comrades in Nepal." Sherwoods managing director Alasdair MacConachie OBE DL, whose father served with the Gurkhas, added: "The Gurkha concert is one the highlights of the year and once again they delighted the audience with their performance. It is vital that we never forget the sacrifices made by Gurkhas over the years and this is a great way of, in some way, repaying this debt."

All proceeds from the concert, expected to exceed last year's donation of over £11,400 will be put to good use to benefit the oldest and most frail Gurkha ex-Servicemen and their widows.
