The Gurkha Welfare Scheme (GWS) is The Gurkha Welfare Trust's field arm. It distributes welfare aid to Gurkha ex-servicemen and their communities under the terms set out by The Gurkha Welfare Trust.
The day to day operations of the GWS and the Area Welfare Centres (AWCs) are run by a Field Director who is stationed in Pokhara. Each AWC is managed by an Area Welfare Officer with a small dedicated team that ensures the old soldiers have access to welfare and medical support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Sometimes operating in a difficult political climate, especially at the height of the Maoist insurgency, the GWS and its team work hard to avoid any real or perceived political allegiances. This neutrality has underscored the GWS's reputation for integrity, courage, diplomacy and resilience.
